If carotid stenosis is symptomatic, a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) with any combination of symptoms of amaurosis fugax, hemiparesis, paralysis dysarthria, dysphagia, aphasia, and facial droop may be seen. Neurologic deficits from a TIA often last seconds to minutes, but less than 24 hours, while a CVA causes a permanent deficit.
