The thumb, multiple digits, transmetacarpal, wrist, forearm, and single digits in children are suitable for replantation. Replanting digits often results in postoperative stiffness and could put the patient at risk for significant infection, so noncritical fingers may be amputated, particularly if the injury is significant and the patient has multiple comorbidities, including tobacco use (Beasley, Aston, Bartlett, Gurtner, & Spear, 2007).
