Outlines in Clinical Medicine® from Skyscape - Version 109 (April 2013)

Introduction

Outlines in Clinical Medicine® (OCM®) is a computer-based medical information program covering internal medicine that allows you to have rapid and convenient access to a wide variety of medical topics. The database is written and maintained by Michael G. Kauffman, MD, PhD (Johns Hopkins and Harvard Medical Schools) and is published by OutlineMed Inc. in Boston, Massachusetts. The handheld software to run the OCM® database has been powered by Skyscape. New, updated editions of the medical database are released every four months. Version 109 contains references through July 2008.

OR ANYONE ELSE ASSOCIATED WITH OUTLINES IN CLINICAL MEDICINE®, CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ERRORS IN JUDGMENT, DIAGNOSIS, OR TREATMENT OF PATIENTS ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF THIS MEDICAL DATABASE.

When prescribing medications, the user is advised to check the product information sheet accompanying each drug to be familiar with any changes in the dosage schedule, drug interactions, or in the contraindications, particularly if the agent to be administered is new or infrequently used.

Goals of Outlines in Clinical Medicine®

The goal of Outlines in Clinical Medicine® is to provide comprehensive overviews of medical topics to persons who have some medical training. OCM® is not an introductory text in medicine. OCM® incorporates large amounts of rapidly changing medical information into succinct, comprehensive, topic summaries. The search format and references are provided with the awareness that students, clinicians, researchers, allied health personnel, pharmaceutical and biotechnology experts, and consultants have little time to read many of the primary studies and review articles in medicine. OCM® is dedicated to integrating the new molecular medicine with the best evidence-based clinical practice currently available.

OCM® is updated every four months with information from more than six major medical journal publications (see list below). Information is also drawn from seminars, review articles, patient care, drug development conferences, and teaching experience.

The Outlines in Clinical Medicine® medical database consists of over 850 separate succinct summaries of topics encountered in General Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine Subspecialties, Emergency Medicine and Family Practice. Topics in geriatrics, pediatrics, ophthalmology, gynecology, obstetrics, psychiatry, and neurology are also covered in some detail. The outlines are organized into topic cards which are linked to each other, an Index and the Table of Contents through hyperlinks. Each topic card is directed to allowing a clinician to care with a patient with a specific disease or symptom. In addition, over 500 Internal Medicine Board's-type review questions (linked to appropriate text) have been added to aide in reviewing topics and in preparation for licensing examinations.

Outlines in Clinical Medicine® is used at more than ten academic institutions. Our medical information database is used nationwide in the USA by the Veteran's Administration Health Care System. It is also used in inpatient and outpatient hospital settings and is available in a growing number of hospital libraries. Healthcare consultants, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, business development and marketing personnel also use the software.

All of the sections are reviewed by editors who are subspecialists in their fields. The process of editing is continuously ongoing, but all sections have been reviewed and edited at least once. A list of editors is found by clicking on the hyperlink below.

Journals Reviewed Regularly In OCM®

The following journals are reviewed regularly and articles considered to be highly relevant to patient care are included in the database. Articles from journals not listed below are added on a less routine basis. In general, references are restricted to journals which are easily accessible to most of our users.
