Why get vaccinated?

Chikungunya vaccine, recombinant may prevent disease that may occur with infection due to chikungunya virus which occurs through bites of infected mosquitoes in areas of the world where the virus is present.

Infection with chikungunya virus can cause the following: fever, headache, rash, joint or muscle pain and joint swelling.

Chikungunya vaccine, recombinant does not contain the chikungunya virus. It works by triggering your immune system to build a defense to the chikungunya virus when it comes in contact with it

How is the vaccine given?

Chikungunya vaccine, recombinant comes as a suspension (liquid) to be given intramuscularly (into the muscle) by a healthcare provider.

Chikungunya vaccine, recombinant is given as a single dose.

What should you tell the person who is giving the vaccine?

Tell your vaccine provider if you:

• have had an allergic reaction to this vaccine, any part of this vaccine, any other vaccine or any drug, food or substance. Tell your vaccine provider about the allergy and what symptoms you had.
• have a condition that suppresses your immune system like human immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV) or are on medications that suppress your immune system such as medications for cancer or an autoimmune condition like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, or inflammatory bowel disease.
• {if no specific recommendations about giving in pregnancy} tell your vaccine provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

In some cases, your health care provider may decide to postpone vaccination to a future visit.

What are the risks from vaccination?

Side effects that have been reported with chikungunya vaccine, recombinant include:

• pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
• extreme tiredness
• headache
• muscle or joint aches or pains
• chills
• nausea

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately or get emergency medical treatment:

• hives, itching, swelling of lips or throat, trouble breathing, fast pulse, dizziness

People sometimes faint after medical procedures, including vaccination. Tell your provider if you feel dizzy or have vision changes or ringing in the ears.

Adverse reactions should be reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Your health care provider will usually file this report, or you can do it yourself. Visit http://vaers.hhs.gov or call 1-800-822-7967. VAERS is only for reporting reactions, and VAERS staff members do not give medical advice.
