Zoster vaccine, recombinant may prevent herpes zoster (Shingles). Shingles happens when a prior infection with the herpes zoster virus becomes active again. This may happen when we age or our immune system is weakened by a condition or medications.

Shingles may cause a painful rash to appear (typically on one side of the body).

Zoster vaccine does not contain live virus. The vaccine works by helping your immune system to respond to the varicella zoster virus in your body and protect you from getting shingles.

How is the vaccine given?

Zoster vaccine, recombinant comes as a suspension (liquid) to be given intramuscularly (into a muscle) by a healthcare provider. It is recommended for adults over 50 years of age or adults 18 years of age and older who are immunocompromised.

Zoster vaccine, recombinant is given as two doses given 2 to 6 months apart for adults over 50 years of age. It may be given 1 to 2 months apart for adults who are immunocompromised.
