Why get vaccinated?

Cholera vaccine may prevent cholera that can occur following infection with V. cholerae.

Cholera is a serious intestinal infection with severe diarrhea and vomiting.V. cholerae is spread by contaminated food or water.

Cholera vaccine contains live bacteria that has been weakened so it can not cause disease but can still stimulate the body to make antibodies against the bacteria to provide a defense against potential infection.

How is the vaccine given?

Cholera vaccine comes as a suspension (liquid) to be taken orally (by mouth) from a healthcare provider. You should not eat or drink anything 60 minutes before or after your dose of vaccine.

Cholera vaccine is given as a one-time single dose to be given at least 10 days before visiting an area where cholera is present.
