HPV type 16 is the subtype most frequently associated with anal cancer. Anal cancer incidence is rising; there were an estimated 5,260 new cases and 720 deaths from anal cancer in the United States in 2010.
Other risk factors include:
- Receptive anal intercourse
- High lifetime number of sexual partners
- Smoking
- Anogenital condylomata
- HIV (via increased HPV infection)
