Anion Gap

Anion Gap in mEq/L =

[Na+] ? ([HCO3?]+[Cl?])

Normal: 12 ± 4 mEq/L

Provides indirect measure of serum anions not routinely measured

Helps categorize acidoses.

Gap acidoses: salicylates, uremic, methanol, paraldehyde, lactic, ethylene glycol, ketoacidosis

Nongap acidoses: carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, RTA, ureteral diversions,diarrhea/GI HCO3 losses.
