Coefficient of Fat Absorption

The coefficient of fat absorption (CFA) is useful in diagnosis of fat malabsorption. It is usually calculated using a 48- or 72 hours quantitative fecal fat determination test

CFA should not vary w/ dietary intake.

A strict record of dietary fat intake & output is needed, so best reserved for patients whose fecal fat excretion is borderline abnormal.

Normal CFA:

  • Premature infants - 60-75%
  • Newborn infants - 80-85%
  • 10 months - 3 years - 85-95%
  • >3 years - 95%

Formula used:

  • Coefficient of Fat Absorption (CFA) = (gms fat ingested - gms fat excreted) × 100 / gms fat ingested

Data the user will need:

  • Amount of fat ingested in gms
  • Amount of fat excreted in gms

Abbreviations used:

  • CFS = Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Interpretation:

User need to enter the above mentioned values, which are used in the formulas given below

  • Percent Fat Absorbed = (gms fat ingested - gms fat excreted) × 100 / gms fat ingested
