It is essential to calculate a corrected calcium level when the serum albumin levels are abnormal (hypoalbuminemia). This is necessary to adjust for alterations in total calcium levels due to alterations in albumin-bound calcium levels. The resulting value presents an estimate of what the calcium level would be in presence of normal albumin levels.
