Corrected Serum Calcium for Albumin

It is essential to calculate a corrected calcium level when the serum albumin levels are abnormal (hypoalbuminemia). This is necessary to adjust for alterations in total calcium levels due to alterations in albumin-bound calcium levels. The resulting value presents an estimate of what the calcium level would be in presence of normal albumin levels.

Formula used:

  • Corrected Serum Ca = measured Ca + [0.8 × (4 - albumin)]
  • measured Ca = measured serum calcium in mg/dL
  • albumin = serum albumin in g/dL

Note: The default normal albumin level is considered to be to 4 mg/dL Standard Units

Data Needed:

  • Measured serum calcium level (mg/dL)
  • Serum albumin level (g/dL)

Abbreviations used:

  • Ca = Calcium

Interpretation:

User need to enter the above mentioned values, which are used in the formulas given below

  • Corrected Serum Ca = measured Ca + [0.8 × (4 - albumin)]
