GFR - Jelliffe Method (Adult)

Accurate estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is essential for appropriate diagnosis and management of chronic kidney disease.

The Jelliffe equation for calculation of creatinine clearance may be used for estimation of GFR in adults; however, it less commonly used in comparison to the Cockcroft-Gaultor MDRD method

Formula used:

Jelliffe Method:

  • GFR for male: [98 - 0.8 × (age - 20) ] × BSA / [1.73 × Serum Creatinine]
  • GFR for female: GFR(females) = GFR(males) × 0.9

Technically, use ideal body weight:

  • Men: 50kg + 2.3kg/inch over 5 ft
  • Women: 45.5kg + 2.3kg/inch over 5 ft

Renal impairment:

  • Normal: >85 mL/min
  • Mild impairment: 60-85 mL/min
  • Moderate impairment: 30-59 mL/min
  • Severe impairment: <30 mL/min

Abbreviations:

  • GFR = Glomerular filtration rate
  • BSA = Body surface area
