Mean Corpusc. Hemo Conc. (MCHC)

Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) refers to grams of hemoglobin (Hgb) per 100 mL packed cells.

MCHC may be high in congenital spherocytic hemolytic anemias and hemoglobin SC disease; may be low in iron deficiency. The normal value in adults is 34 ± 2 g/dL.

Formula used:

  • [Hgb (gm %) × 100] / Hct(%) = MCHC

Where, Hgb (gm %) = hemoglobin in g/dL, and Hct(%) = hematocrit volume in percentage

Abbreviations:

  • Hgb = Hemoglobin
  • Hct = Hematocrit
  • MCHC = Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration
