Mean Corpuscular Volume

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) refers to the average RBC volume measured in femtoliters (fl). Usually measured by electronic counters.

MCV is useful in classification of anemias. The normal value in adults is 90 ± 7 fl

Formula used:

  • [Hct (%) × 10] / RBC count (mil/mm3) = MCV

Where, Hct(%) = hematocrit volume in percentage, and RBC count (mil/mm3) = RBC count in millions per cubic millimeters

Abbreviations:

  • Hct = Hematocrit
  • MCV = Mean corpuscular volume
  • RBC = Red blood cells
