Urine Output, Pediatric

Estimation of urine output in children is required for evaluation of circulatory status, dehydration, or presence of conditions such as kidney obstruction/damage.

In children, urine output is most adequately assessed by stating the amount of urine produced per hour over a designated period of time. (Adults can usually just be reported as mL/hr as the difference in body weight among adults does not vary as greatly as a percentage as it does in children)

Minimum acceptable output:

  • Adult: 0.5-1.0 mL/kg/hr
  • Child: 1.0-2.0 mL/kg/hr

Formula:

Urine output in mL/kg/hr = (Total Urine Output/Weight in Kg)/# of hours
