Hepatitis Discriminant Function

Hepatitis discriminant function devised by Maddrey, Boitnott, et al. is useful for predicting the prognosis of alcoholic hepatitis and whether the patient will benefit from corticosteroid therapy.

A score of >32 is indicative of poor prognosis, necessitating steroid therapy

Formula used:

  • Discriminant Function for Steroid Therapy = (4.6*(Pro.Time-Patient - Pro.Time-Control)) + Bilirubin

Pro.Time-Patient = Patient's prothrombin time in seconds

Pro.Time-Control = Control prothrombin time in seconds

Bilirubin = Total bilirubin in mg/dL
