Predicted expiratory flow

Predicted Expiratory Flow (PEF) is a valuable test in asthma and is used to:

  • Determine both acute and chronic severity of illness
  • Monitor response to both acute and chronic therapies
  • Develop care plans with patients of when to seek acute care, call their healthcare provider, or self initiate steroid therapy

This computerized routine has been developed from NHANESII data to predict what a given individual's PEF should be. It is however recommended that patient's monitor their own PEF based upon their personal best while their asthma is well controlled.
