Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is part of a group of disorders known as Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs). Criteria is based upon symptoms as no clear laboratory or other objective structural abnormalities are consistently present.
These criteria are not highly specific or sensitive; but IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion and based upon symptoms.
