CXR needed? (Pneumonia; Adults)

These guidelines for when a chest radiograph should probably be obtained to evaluate for pneumonia are for use in otherwise healthy adults with an acute respiratory illness.

A radiograph is usually indicated if 1 Major criteria or 2 Minor criteria are present.

Major Criteria:

  • Temperature >100°F (>37.8°C)
  • Heart rate >100/minute
  • Respiratory rate >20/minute

Minor Criteria:

  • Crackles (Rales)
  • Decreased breath sounds
  • No history of asthma
