The Blatt-Kupperman Index (commonly known as the Kupperman Index, or KI) is an 11-item menopausal symptom questionnaire that has been used in hundreds of clinical studies to determine menopausal symptom prevalence and to evaluate the efficacy of an array of therapies intended to alleviate menopausal symptoms. It has also been used as the basis for validation of other questionnaires.
The Kupperman Index (KI) is a tool developed in the 1950s that, while widely criticized, continues to be used but often in a modified format. The questions are a mix of self-reported information from women as well as health-care provider scores. The KI is numerical index that scores 11 menopausal symptoms: hot flushes, paresthesia (burning or prickling sensations), insomnia, nervousness, melancholia (deep sadness or depression), vertigo, weakness, arthralgia (joint stiffness or pain) or myalgia (muscle aches or pain), headache, [heart] palpitations, and formication (sensation of insects crawling on your skin). Each symptom is rated from 0 to 3 according to severity. The scores are weighted and a total sum is calculated with a higher score indicating a worse quality of life.
Symptoms | Weighting factor | Severity type | Sevirtity scale |
---|---|---|---|
Vasomotor | 4 | Moderate | 8 |
Paraesthesia | 2 | Severe | 6 |
Insomnia | 2 | Severe | 6 |
Nervousness | 2 | Moderate | 4 |
Melancholia | 1 | Severe | 3 |
Vertigo | 1 | Slight | 1 |
Weakness (fatigue) | 1 | Slight | 1 |
Arthralgia and myalgia | 1 | Moderate | 2 |
Headaches | 1 | Slight | 1 |
Palpitations | 1 | Severe | 3 |
Formication | 1 | None | 0 |
Score : It is calculated as Weighting Factor x Severity scale. These scores are then summed across the 11 items and total sum is categorised as follows:
