Atrial Fibrillation Thromboembolic Risk

The study sought to identify patients with nonrheumatic atrial fibrillation at high risk and those that were at low risk for arterial thromboembolism.

Three factors were identified as increasing risk:

  1. Congestive Heart Failure (within last 3 months)
  2. History of Hypertension
  3. Previous arterial thromboembolism

With none of the three items listed above, the risk of arterial thromboembolism was 2.5%/year; whereas if one of these three was present the risk was 7.2%/year and with either two or three of these factors being present, the risk as 17.6%/year.
