AHA/NHLBI Metabolic Syndrome Criteria (2005)

Metabolic syndrome clinical criteria, proposed by the American Heart Association and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, requires that >=3 of these 5 items be present to make this diagnosis.

The 5 items include:

  • Abdominal obesity (Waist in Male >40" or Female >35")
  • Triglycerides >=150 mg/dL or on triglyceride lowering medication
  • HDL cholesterol (Male <40 or Female <50 mg/dL) or on HDL improving medications
  • Blood pressure >=130/>=85 mmHg or on anti-hypertensive medication
  • Fasting glucose >=100 mg/dL or on glucose lowering medication
