This calculator calculates the Kilocalories (Kcal) or Kilojoules (KJ) of ethanol contained in a given volume and proof. This routine only calculates the energy (Kcal or KJ) from ethanol.
Because the specific gravity of ethanol is 0.8 g/mL, and alcohol content of drinks is usually represented as Proof, which is based upon the contribution of the ethanol by volume (not weight), and ethanol is 7 Kcal (29.4 KJ)/gram; some calculation is required.
It is important to note that this only addresses energy from ethanol as most drinks have substantial amounts of energy (Kcal/KJ) from items mixed in with the source of ethanol.
This routine will ask for the quantity (ounces or mL) consumed, the proof or % ethanol and whether the user would like output in Kcal or KJ.
The equivalents are:
1 ounce = 29.6 mL
1 proof = 0.5%
1 Kcal = 4.2 KJ
The formula is:
Kcal = mL consumed x fraction ethanol x 0.8 grams/mL x 7 Kcal/gram
KJ = Kcal x 4.2 KJ/Kcal
For example, 100 mL of a 75 proof liquor in Kcals would compute as:
Kcal = 100x 0.375 x 0.8 x 7 = 210 Kcal
