These criteria are that of the International Headache Society, published in 1988.

Migraine without Aura Criteria

#1 At least 5 headaches that lasted 4-72 hours (untreated or unsuccessfully treated) that had at least 2 of the following 4 items:

  • Unilateral location
  • Pulsating quality
  • Moderate or severe intensity (inhibits or prohibits daily activities)
  • Aggravated by walking stairs or similar routine physical activity

#2 During the headache 1 or more of the following was present:

  • Phonophobia and photophobia
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
