This third edition of Statistics for Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing builds on the strengths of past editions and includes new material to better support nurses on their journey with evidence-based practice. The addition of co-author Dr. Teresa D. Valerio to our team brings a greater sensitivity to the role of advanced practice nurses in evidence-based practice.

We continue to work to ensure the writing is accessible, the examples and case studies are up-to-date, and changes in SPSS are included. We have incorporated recommendations from our readers and have added step-by-step approaches to statistical techniques using Microsoft Excel. More important, we have incorporated important recommendations from the American Statistics Association (ASA) regarding the use of p-values and incorporation of statistical meaningfulness in relation to practical or clinical significance. We have also taken time to create and expand the practice data sets, as well as large data sets. These are intended to support student learning and guide educators.

We think this book will be most helpful for entry-level graduate students in Master of Science and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, but it may also be useful for undergraduate students or as a refresher for students entering PhD programs. Our intention has always been to create a learning environment in which students will find statistics accessible. We hope that this book will serve as a resource for nurses at all levels who are engaged in the process of improving health care to promote patient outcomes across the breadth of settings and roles. Nurses, now more than ever, must be prepared to lead these efforts, and we have designed this text to help in these undertakings.
