Assessing the patient and understanding the clinical purpose (indication); understanding the desire outcome for administration of a particular medication
Preparing the medication to be administered (checking labels, preparing injections, observing proper asepsis techniques with needles and syringes)
Calculating accurate dosages
Validating medication calculations with another nurse
Administering the medication (e.g., proper injection techniques, aids to help swallowing, topical methods, and so on)
Documenting the medications given
Monitoring the patient's reaction and evaluating the patient's response
Collaborating with other members of the health care team involved in the patient's care.
Educating the patient regarding their medications and medication regimen
