Methylergonovine maleate is administered intramuscularly.3299 The drug also may be administered intravenously slowly over no less than 1 minute, in combination with careful blood pressure monitoring, if intravenous administration is considered essential as a life-saving measure; it should not be administered routinely by the intravenous route.3299 Administration of methylergonovine maleate by intra-arterial or periarterial injection must be strictly avoided.3299
Methylergonovine maleate injection is a clear, colorless solution.3299 Intact vials should be stored under refrigeration at 2 to 8°C and protected from light.3299 The product should be inspected visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration.3299
To prevent inadvertent administration to newborn infants, methylergonovine maleate should be stored separately from medications intended for neonatal administration.3299
