Allopurinol sodium is available as a lyophilized powder or cake in single-dose vials containing the equivalent of 500 mg of allopurinol with sodium hydroxide 148 mg.3954 Reconstitute with 25 mL of sterile water for injection to yield a solution containing allopurinol 20 mg/mL.3954 The reconstituted solution must be diluted for intravenous infusion.3954

Administration

Allopurinol sodium is administered by intravenous infusion following reconstitution and dilution in sodium chloride 0.9% or dextrose 5% to a final concentration of less than 6 mg/mL.3954

Stability

Allopurinol sodium is a white lyophilized powder that forms a clear to slightly opalescent, almost colorless solution upon reconstitution.3954 Intact vials should be stored at controlled room temperature.3954

The diluted solution for infusion may be stored for up to 10 hours after initial reconstitution at 20 to 25°C, including the infusion time.3954 Administration should be completed within 10 hours after reconstitution.3954 Any unused portions should be discarded.3954

The reconstituted solution and diluted infusion solution should not be refrigerated.3954
