Caffeine citrate injection is available as a 20-mg/mL solution in 3-mL preservative-free, single-dose vials containing 60 mg of caffeine citrate.3915 Each mL of solution contains caffeine citrate 20 mg prepared from caffeine anhydrous 10 mg with citric acid monohydrate 5 mg and sodium citrate dihydrate 8.3 mg in water for injection.3915

Administration

Caffeine citrate injection is administered undiluted by slow intravenous injection using a syringe pump over 30 minutes as a loading dose and over 10 minutes as a maintenance dose.3915

Stability

Caffeine citrate injection is a clear, colorless solution.3915 Intact vials should be stored at controlled room temperature.3915

Syringes

Caffeine (salt form unspecified) 10 mg/mL was repackaged in glass and plastic syringes (Becton Dickinson) and stored at room temperature and 4°C. Less than 4% loss occurred over 60 days.139

Caffeine citrate injection at a caffeine concentration of 10 mg/mL (Sabex) was repackaged in 1-mL polypropylene syringes (Becton Dickinson) capped with polyolefin tip caps (Monoject) and stored at 20.5 to 22.5°C under fluorescent light.3916 No color change or precipitation was observed and no loss of drug occurred over 180 days.3916
