Products

Potassium acetate is available as a 2 mEq/mL concentrate for injection in 20 mL single-dose vials and 50-mL pharmacy bulk packages.3793; 3794 Each mL of the concentrate contains 196 mg of potassium acetate in water for injection with acetic acid to adjust pH.3793

Osmolarity

The 2-mEq/mL concentrate has a calculated osmolarity of 4000 mOsm/L.3793

Administration

Potassium acetate is administered by slow intravenous infusion only after dilution in a larger volume of fluid.3793 The diluted solution may also be administered by intraosseous infusion if intravenous access is not readily available.3793 The concentrate for injection must not be administered undiluted.3793 The infusion rate should not exceed 1 mEq/kg/hr.3793

Stability

Potassium acetate concentrate for injection is a clear solution.3793 Intact vials should be stored at controlled room temperature.3793; 3794

Unused portions of single-dose vials should be discarded.3793 Once the closure of the pharmacy bulk vial has been penetrated with a suitable sterile dispensing set or transfer device, the vial should not be re-entered.3794 Any unused portion should be discarded after 4 hours of initial vial entry.3794
