Administration

Hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 6% in sodium chloride 0.9% is administered only by intravenous infusion.3453 Any remaining solution in partially used containers should be discarded.3453 The dosage and rate of infusion should be individualized according to the patient’s condition and response.3453 The container is made of nondiethylhexyl phthalate (non-DEHP) plastic and is latex free.3453 The container itself does not require a vented intravenous administration set, and the manufacturer states that administration of the drug should not be vented.3453 The product should be inspected for discoloration and particulate matter prior to use.3453 If the drug is administered by pressure infusion, air should be withdrawn or expelled from the container through the medication/administration port prior to infusion.3453

Stability

Hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 6% in sodium chloride 0.9% is a clear to slightly opalescent colorless to slightly yellow colloidal solution.3453 The product should be stored at 15 to 25°C and should not be frozen.3453 The bag of solution should not be removed from the overwrap until immediately prior to use.3453 It should only be administered if the solution is clear and free from particles.3453 The solution should be administered immediately after insertion of the administration set.3453
