Generic Name

Products

Hydroxyzine hydrochloride injection is available as a 25-mg/mL solution in 1-mL single-dose vials.70 It also is available as a 50-mg/mL solution in 1- and 2-mL single-dose vials and 10-mL multiple-dose vials.70 Each mL of solution contains hydroxyzine hydrochloride 25 or 50 mg along with benzyl alcohol 0.9% in water for injection.70 Sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid may be used to adjust the pH.70

Administration

Hydroxyzine hydrochloride may be administered undiluted by intramuscular injection only, preferably into the upper outer quadrant of the buttock or the midlateral thigh muscles in adults.70 In children, the midlateral muscles of the thigh are preferred.70

Stability

Hydroxyzine should be stored at controlled room temperature and protected from light.70 Unused portions of single-use vials should be discarded.70

Chlorpromazine and Meperidine

Chlorpromazine hydrochloride (Elkins-Sinn) 6.25 mg/mL, hydroxyzine hydrochloride (Pfizer) 12.5 mg/mL, and meperidine hydrochloride (Winthrop) 25 mg/mL, in both glass and plastic syringes, were reported to be physically compatible and chemically stable for at least 1 year at 4 and 25°C when protected from light.989
