Ethacrynate sodium is available as a lyophilized powder in vials containing ethacrynate sodium equivalent to ethacrynic acid 50 mg and mannitol 62.5 mg.2505 Reconstitute the contents of each vial with 50 mL of dextrose 5% or sodium chloride 0.9%.2505 Some dextrose 5% solutions have a pH below 5 and may result in a hazy or opalescent solution; use of such solutions is not recommended.2505 Solutions should be visually inspected for particulate matter and discoloration prior to use.2505
pH
Reconstitution with dextrose 5% or sodium chloride 0.9% results in a solution having a pH of 6.3 to 7.7.4
Sodium Content
Ethacrynate sodium contains 0.165 mEq of sodium per 50 mg of ethacrynic acid equivalent.846
Trade Name(s)
Sodium Edecrin
Ethacrynate sodium may be given slowly through the tubing of a running intravenous solution or by direct intravenous injection over several minutes.2505 Subcutaneous or intramuscular injection should not be used because of local pain and irritation.2505
Intact containers of ethacrynate sodium should be stored at controlled room temperature.2505 Solutions of ethacrynate sodium are relatively stable for short periods at pH 7 at room temperature; but the solutions are less stable as the pH or temperature increase.2505 The reconstituted solution should be discarded after 24 hours.2505
