Bone and Soft-Tissue Disorders
Age: infant
Cause:
- inadequate iron stores at birth
- deficient iron in diet
- impaired gastrointestinal absorption of iron
- excessive iron demands from blood loss
- polycythemia vera
- cyanotic CHD
- widening of diploe + thinning of tables with sparing of occiput (no red marrow)
- hair-on-end appearance of skull
- osteoporosis in long bones (most prominent in hands)
- absence of facial bone involvement
