This is known as the “recovery position” with the child lying in the lateral decubitus position with the neck extended and mouth open. In this position, oropharyngeal secretions, blood, and vomitus will drain onto the gurney rather than collect in the parapharyngeal region and trigger upper airway reflex responses.
