  1. The technique is similar to that used for single-shot spinal anesthesia except that a needle large enough to accommodate the desired catheter must be inserted. (The catheter is inserted 2 to 3 cm into the subarachnoid space.)
  2. Although smaller catheters decrease the risk of PDPH, they have been associated with reports of neurologic injury. (The recommendation is to avoid using a catheter smaller than 24 gauge.)
