NMBDs are useful in intensive care units to facilitate mechanical ventilation, and their use is frequent in patients requiring ventilation in the prone position, permissive hypercapnia, high positive end-expiratory pressures, and elevated airway pressures (Table 20-10: Altered Responses to Neuromuscular Blocking Agents).
