granulation
- The formation of granules or the state of being granular.
- Fleshy projections formed on the surface of a gaping wound that is not healing by first intention or indirect union. Each granulation represents the outgrowth of new capillaries by budding from the existing capillaries and then joining up into capillary loops supported by cells that will later become fibrous scar tissue. Granulations bring a rich blood supply to the healing surface.
arachnoid g.Evaginations of arachnoid membrane through the inner layer of dura mater into the superior sagittal sinus and other venous sinuses of the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid reenters the bloodstream through these granulations. SYN: arachnoid villus; pacchionian body.
exuberant g.An excess of granulation formed in the healing of a wound or ulcer; proud flesh.
toxic g.The abnormal appearance of white blood cells in patients with serious infectious diseases. The intracytoplasmic granules in the white blood cells show increased staining caused by the increased acid mucoprotein content of the cells.
