infibulation

(infib yŭ-lā'shŏn )

[L. infibulare, to close with a clasp]

  1. The act of fastening, as of the lips of wounds by clasps.
  2. Surgical modification or mutilation of the genitals in males and females, usually girls and boys. Infibulation is the most extreme form of female genital mutilation because the clitoris, labia minora, and most of the labia majora are completely excised and most of the vagina is stitched closed.

Male infibulation involves suturing of the penis and is much rarer than female infibulation.
