nucleus basalis of M.A nucleus with large cells in the substantia innominata. The nucleus basalis is connected with the amygdala and innervates most of the cerebral cortex. Axons from this nucleus are cholinergic and degenerate in Alzheimer disease. SYN: basal nucleus; nucleus basalis.
