vitamin B12

A red crystalline substance extracted from the liver, essential for the formation of red blood cells. Deficiency of vitamin B12 results in pernicious anemia. It is used for prophylaxis and treatment of these and other diseases in which there is defective red cell formation. The recommended adult daily requirement is 2 µg/day.
