subacute t.A relatively rare, self-limiting inflammation of the thyroid gland , characterized by anterior neck pain, thyroid gland tenderness, painful swallowing and /or hoarseness, and transient fluctuations in thyroid function. It often follows an upper respiratory illness and usually resolves in several months. SYN: de Quervain thyroiditis; giant cell thyroiditis; subacute granulomatous thyroiditis.
