papillary carcinoma of the thyroid
Variant: papillary thyroid carcinoma
A well-differentiated thyroid cancer, and the most common form of thyroid cancer in the U.S. Most thyroid cancers of this type grow slowly and respond well to treatment. They are usually identified as a thyroid nodule and are best diagnosed with fine needle aspiration biopsy. Treatments may include thyroid lobectomy or total thyroidectomy, sometimes combined with adjuvant radioactive iodine therapy. Survival ten years after diagnosis and treatment exceeds 90%.
