A member of the herpesvirus family (human herpesvirus 4). It can cause acute infectious syndromes, including infectious mononucleosis, and in some individuals, Hodgkin lymphoma, Burkett lymphoma, or nasopharyngeal carcinoma. EBV has also been linked to the subsequent development of multiple sclerosis.
