- Copious effusion of blood into an organ, as in abdominal apoplexy or pulmonary apoplexy.
- An obsolete term for stroke, esp. of a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.
esophageal a.An intramural hematoma of the esophagus.
pituitary a.Hemorrhage into the pituitary that results in necrosis and neurological impairment. Symptoms include sudden headache, oculomotor palsy, peripheral visual deficits, and altered mental status. Treatment usually includes prompt administration of adrenal steroids.
