Urine Aspiration Sampling in a Child

Ultrasonography facilitates locating the bladder and choosing the time for the procedure. In this patient, the bladder was first empty, which is why the procedure was delayed for 30 minutes to allow the bladder to fill. After this time, the anterior wall of the bladder was visible at the depth of just over 1 cm from the skin, and the back wall was at 3 cm from the skin (the scale is visible on the left side of the screen). The puncture site is slightly proximal (towards the navel) from the skin fold above the symphysis. The skin can be anaesthetized with lidocain-prilocain ointment. The needle is inserted quickly into the bladder to avoid the child moving during the procedure. If no urine is obtained, the needle is retracted slowly while aspirating gently. Sometimes a specimen is obtained at this stage. The sample is cultured both in an aerobic blood culture bottle and on a chocolate agar plate. Some of the sample is transferred to a urine sample tube for particle counting.
