Deep Venous Thrombosis (Compression Ultrasonography)

A 82-year-old woman with a history of recurrent venous thrombosis had an INR below target range for two weeks. A few days before the consultation her left leg became swollen below the knee. Compression ultrasonography revealed that the popliteal vein was incompressible, when gentle pressure was repeatedly applied to the probe (first a transverse view, then a longitudinal view of the vein). The thrombus in the vein is slightly echogenic. The artery under the vein is incompressible and pulsatile. For normal compression ultrasonography see video Compression Ultrasonography of Veins.
