Levonorgestrel Combined with Ethinyloestradiol for Postcoital Contraception

Levonorgestrel or mifepristone is more effective than the traditional Yuzpe regimen. Level of evidence: "A"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 9 trials with a total of 6894 women. Mifepristone (all doses) (RR 0.14, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.41; 3 trials, n=2144) and levonorgestrel 1.5mg (RR 0.57, 95% CI 0.39 to 0.84; 6 RCTs, n=4 750) were more effective than the Yuzpe regimen (levonorgestrel 0.5 mg + ethinyloestradiol 100 µg twice at 12 h intervals) in preventing pregnancy.
