Summary of symptoms and findings for the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy or painful diabetic neuropathy. The results must fit the criteria for diabetic neuropathy (e.g. symmetric occurrence and gradient from distal to proximal). Touch sensation is assessed with a 10 g monofilament, vibration sensation with a 128 Hz sound bar, pain/sharp sensation e.g. with a cut-off end of a wooden spatula cut in two, and heat and cold sensation with a standardised instrument (e.g. test tubes containing hot and cold water).
