Superficial Venous Thrombosis
A patient with advanced colon cancer had pain and erythema on the medial aspect of the leg. There was marked palpatory tenderness in the area and the subcutaneous tissue felt hardened. Ultrasonography confirmed the clinical suspicion of a superficial venous thrombosis: the veins were dilated and not compressible. A poorly echogenic heterogeneous thrombus was visible. There was some tenderness also on the inner thigh, but no erythema. The veins were not compressible here either. The image shows two veins, the larger and deeper one being the great saphenous vein (vena saphena magna). The thrombus extended to the upper third of the thigh, but in the inguinal region, both the femoral vein (large arrow) and the great saphenous vein (small arrow) were compressible. The patient was treated with enoxaparin.
